Keeping Your Toddler Safe in the Bedroom

As your toddler grows older they will become more mobile and you may experience your little one climbing out of their cot, which is a sign that they’re not so little anymore! Moving them into a ‘big bed’ now means your child can climb out of bed whenever they like. This means it is very important to keep their room as safe as possible to prevent any accidents.

Suggestions To Help You Plan Ahead And Keep Your Little One Safe In Their Bedroom:

  • Windows can be great for natural light and fresh air. However, you should install safety locks on their window so it can only be opened to a small gap which is not big enough for your toddler to climb through
  • To help prevent your toddler from falling off the bed, try pushing one side of the bed against a wall. You can also install a guardrail on the unprotected side of the bed
  • Fit any stairs with safety-guards so they are not at risk of falling down the stairs when they are unsupervised or when it is dark.
  • Make sure any electrical items, such as heaters, are turned off and the cords are wrapped up when not in use
  • Look for any curtain or blind cords that are dangling low that your toddler can reach. You can tie them into a simple knot or bow to keep them up high. These could potentially be hazardous, if your toddler decides to play with them
  • Remove any toys or objects from your child’s bedroom which are a safety risk such as plastic bags that toys came in, grocery sacks or objects that may be small enough to swallow or be a choking hazard.

Bunk beds are not a good idea for toddlers, they can occasionally fall out of bed in their sleep and if they are sleeping on the top bunk the extra height puts them at risk of injuries. It is also important not to give your toddler a pillow until they reach the age of two as it can put them at risk of suffocation.
