Choosing a Breast Pump

At some point, a mother who is breastfeeding may decide to express. There are many reasons for expressing. No matter your reason, the most confusing part is deciding which breast pump is best for you. Below is some information on the different options.

Hand (Manual) Pumps

There are many different manual breast pumps available, of varying design. A better designed pump will meet the following features:

  • Simple to use
  • Economical
  • Comfortable
  • Safe to use
  • Can be portable.

Cons: Some mums find their hands get tired when using hand pumps often and for long periods.

Battery-operated Pumps

These small and light pumps can be convenient. Yet it’s important to:

  • Consider how often you will use it, as these pumps are best for occasional use
  • Look for one with an adjustable suction speed for nipple comfort.

Cons: They are not designed to be used more than once or twice a day. If you are going to express more frequently and for long periods, you will probably benefit from an electric breast pump.

Electric Pumps

Electric pumps can be time-saving, but here are some things you should consider:

  • Choose a model with adjustable suction speeds for nipple comfort
  • How often you will use it, as they’re helpful when needed for extended periods of time.

Cons: These can be costly. However you may be able to hire one from the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) or a local pharmacy.

Remember: Breast pumps are personal items and shouldn’t be shared whilst you are using them. If hiring a pump, always check they have been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before use.

Speak to your midwife or lactation consultant for advice before hiring or purchasing a breast pump.
